Since 1981, every year on 21st of September, people around the world mark the International Day of Peace. This year, our PYP students joined them with “Peace is Discovery”.

PYP students from EYFS through to Year 6 took part in “Peace is Discovery” activities to celebrate the international Peace Day through learning, creativity, reflection and experiences beyond the classroom. The celebration took place between 21st and 25th of September. Students explored what peace can mean for themselves and their relation with a wider community.

Different activities took place in “Pease is Discovery”. One of the main highlights was: yoga session on green led by Anna, giving opportunity to experience peace through mindfulness and movement. Mr. Gareth, Head of School and PYP Coordinator, said that “Yoga was a particular hit with the students.”

Additionally, early years experienced a sign language lesson as an activity. Year 1 was creating their own pease t-shirts and exploring the local community of Tivat beyond the classroom. It was observed that students tend to enjoy mainly collaborative activities.

Why does peace matter for students? According to Mr. Gareth, learning about it: “goes beyond simply understanding the absence of conflict. It is about developing empathy, respect, kindness and an understanding of different perspectives.” He added that these are: “important qualities for our students as they grow into internationally minded and responsible members of their communities.”
